Obituary

Former Staten Islander Henny Pauline Ulvestad, 88, of 2900 Sugarberry Lane, Midlothian, Virginia, a dedicated volunteer who loved to cook, died Friday at her home.

Born Henny Rod in Molde, Norway, she lived in Kobe, Japan; Rockford, Illinois; and Mabel, Minnesota before settling on Nevada Avenue in Egbertville in 1964. She moved to Midlothian eleven years ago.

Mrs. Ulvestad worked as a nurse before dedicating her career to Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, where her husband, Sverre, served as its administrator from 1964 to 1982.

She worked alongside her husband, helping him as he expanded the facility from a forty-two-bed home to a 378-bed home. She stood by him proudly at fund-raisers, served with him on various committees and boards, and volunteered her own time visiting with residents.

Together, the couple were members of the South Shore Rotary, Community Board 2, and the Norwegian Lutheran Seamen's Mission, a philanthropic organization through which they traveled the world and served others.

While living in Midlothian, Mrs. Ulvestad continued her volunteerism as a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church - through the church, she worked with the homeless and with the non-profit organization, Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Ulvestad could often be found in the kitchen, cooking and baking for friends and guests - she was always willing to share her recipes with anyone who asked, said her family.

She also loved spending time with her family - especially her three grandchildren, Kristina, Hannah, and Christopher.

In addition to her husband of sixty-four years, Sverre, and her grandchildren, surviving Mrs. Ulvestad are her daughter, Elisabeth Brennan.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from the Woody Funeral Home, Midlothian, with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Christ the King Church.
Burial will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park, Richmond.
