Clara Skinner Obituary
Published by El Camino Memorial - Pacific Beach on Apr. 4, 2010.
Clara "Chris" L. Skinner passed away peacefully Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego, with her husband, Ray, by her side. Chris was born March 5, 1921, the youngest of five children to Kristian and Marie Lyster of Astoria, Oregon. Following graduation from high school, she and her brother, Melvin, were employed by the Army Air Force, Chris at William Airfield, Arizona, and Melvin at nearby Falcon Field as Chief instructor training British pilots on instrument navigation using the Link Trainer. With WWII in the Pacific gaining momentum Chris moved to California and joined the U.S. Navy with assignment to the Aviation Supply Depot, Oakland where she served for the duration of the war. In this capacity she was commended by the Navy for her contribution toward winning of the war and for meritorious and efficient performance of duty, and displaying exceptional diligence and assumed responsibility and discretionary supervision beyond that commensurate with her rate. Following discharge in 1946 Chris became a wonderful wife and homemaker for 63 years. At the same time she had a career of her own. She was commended by the Navy League for her very active support of its Operation Welcome program by greeting Navy vessels and personnel returning the U.S. from long-term deployments. For many years, she represented the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau at conventions. Attired in an attractive red jacket she greeted out-of-town conventioneers and manned information and registration booths. While her Navy husband was deployed, Chris was employed as an insurance claims examiner, and for a hobby she had a distributorship for picture post cards. Chris loved playing golf with her girlfriends; she was a vocal Charger Backer; she thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, and above all, just being with family and friends. Chris is survived by her husband, Ray, sister-in-law, Virginia, niece, Barbara and her family; nephew Ron, niece Patty, cousin, Agnes and more distant family. Her parents and brothers, Arthur, Karl, Melvin and Selmer are deceased. Services will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. A Celebration is planned for May. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to San Diego Hospice or Sharp Memorial Hospital Hospice. Chris, reach out and touch the face of God for us down here!
