The funeral service for Alvin Sandness, 93, Valley City, N.D. was at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25, 2005 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Valley City. Burial will be in the Litchville Cemetery, Litchville, N.D. He died Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Visitation was on Thursday, November 24, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City and continued an hour prior to services in the church.
Alvin Johannes Sandness was born near Litchville, North Dakota on August 5,1912. He was the son of Christian and Oline (Londahl) Sandness. Alvin attended Rosebud Township School in rural Litchville.
He married Inga Gjerding in 1936. He farmed near Marion, North Dakota for a time before moving to Fargo, North Dakota in the mid 1940's where he worked at Armour Packaging Plant. After working there for 2 years, he returned to farming. Alvin put his farm into soil bank and moved to Valley City.
On September 15, 1972, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Myers in Webster, South Dakota. They made their home in Valley City. Alvin worked as a carpenter at Maryvale Convent during construction. Upon construction completion, he stayed on as their custodian and maintenance man.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City. His favorite hobby was gardening. He planted vegetables, flowers and trees.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of Valley City; children: Alvin Sandness, Jr. of Marion, N.D.; Beverly (Robert) Krieger of Freemont, California; Milo Sandness of Jamestown, N.D.; Tammy (Steve) Edland of McHenry, N.D. and Heidi Sandness of Valley City.
Also surviving are step-children: Linda Hendrickson of Valley City; Annette Zaun of Valley City; LeEtta (Andy) Korop of Albany, Oregon and Carol (Phillip) Mortenson of Richfield, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren and a brother, Elmer (Evelyn) of Jamestown, N.D.He was preceded in death by his parents; sons: Mitchell W. Sandness and Curtis L. Sandness; 2 sisters and 5 brothers.
Funeral arrangements are by Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City.
